AM Talk Radio Saved Free Speech - Twice

On Oct. 10th, when Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham gave orders to arrest 11 Christians for preaching at a homosexual rally, she knew how easily the corrupt Philadelphia court system could be "greased" to obtain their conviction as "hate criminals." As a seasoned prosecutor, she would never have initiated such a preposterous case had she not been certain she could win. Corrupt assistance, not only in the Philadelphia courts but through the Pennsylvania appeals process as well, would make that possible.

Predictably, the conservative circuit court judge, who was in line to hear the Christians' case, was dismissed. A radically pro-homosexual judge, William Austin Meehan, filled his place.

As a national executive board member of the Anti-Defamation League, Abraham knew that the ADL would maintain a national news blackout. Consequently, the fate of the Christians was sealed; they would surely be convicted of "hate crimes" and could receive up to 47 years in prison.

Enter AM Talk Radio!

Because AM talk radio is not fully part of the ADL apparatus of media control, many AM talk show hosts allowed me, all last summer, to relentlessly expose the danger to free speech concealed in the ADL's monster federal "anti-hate" bill, "The Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act."

This legislation, which would establish a "thought police" bureaucracy abolishing free speech in America (as in Canada and Sweden), was widely believed to be a sure pass. It had been overwhelmingly approved in amendment form by the Senate on June 15th, 65 to 33. The same approval was expected from the House.

Yet, largely as a result of the widespread protest we generated, this Orwellian bill, which the ADL described as their most important legislation of the year, was defeated for the third time in conference between the House and Senate on Oct. 8th.

Thus, when the ADL in fury and frustration struck back against the "Philadelphia 11" Christians two days later on Oct. 10th, AM radio and I were prepared and battle-ready.

Immediately, we were all over the airwaves calling the attention of the world to Philadelphia. As a consequence of our efforts, which were soon assisted by Michael Marcavage, head of the embattled Christians and his lawyers, millions of Americans became aware of the plight of the "Philadelphia 11." They also learned of the ADL origins of the Pennsylvania hate law that empowered the Christians' arrests. Awakened Americans came to reject the whole idea of "anti-hate" laws.

In short, a case that Lynne Abraham and the ADL thought was an easy win became their worst nightmare. Angry communications from around the world demanding an investigation besieged both Philadelphia city government and the U.S. Justice Department.

Sizzling in the hot-seat, Lynne Abraham and the Philadelphia prosecution wanted out - fast. As a result, instead of another liberal judge being appointed to hear the case in the next higher court, the Court of Common Pleas, I believe that the hidden conspirators, who had first removed a conservative judge, now favored a conservative: Judge Pamela Dembe.

Judge Dembe was true to her character and released the Christians. She found not a shred of evidence that they had done anything wrong.

But it never would have happened without the vigilance and cooperation of AM Talk Radio.
